The lovebirds
For most of my adult life, birds have played a role, often appearing as little or not-so-little messengers. They always remind me of my sister, the late author, Amanda Davis., but the seed for Lovebirds was planted when I first learned I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, Mazzy.
I was showing my paintings there and another artist, Debbie Serdy, a.k.a. My Aunt Debbie, was selling her wonderfully wacky goods. I fell in love with a magnet she had made from a vintage teal coaster with an image of two birds sitting together. One of the birds was rounder and had an orange gem on its belly. At that point, Mazzy was a secret that no one knew about. I felt like that bird with its little glowing treasure inside.
The first Lovebirds creation.
Six months later when I was creating Mazzy’s nursery, I created a silhouette painting of two birdies perched together on a branch, forever linked. Later when we returned from Panama, I refined the image to design the wooden cutout Lovebirds.
This was the beginning of what would become the Lovebirds series, a symbol of connection, warmth, and the cherished bonds that tie us together.
